Karma In The 90’s

Way back in the mid nineties I worked with a girl named Rhiannon. She was gorgeous, vibrant, dark, mysterious, flirty, and she could sell anything. She had a thick southern drawl that made you feel like you were sitting on a front porch sipping lemonade in the sunshine. She had long auburn hair and was about 5’2″ and petite with a billion dollar smile. Yeah, not a million dollar smile but a billion dollar smile. That’s what the guys said at the office. There wasn’t a day that went by that they weren’t talking about her and how they’d like to……. well, you get the point.

You could say she was at the top of her game. She had a sense of style and dressed to win. This was when the TV show Ally McBeal was on and short skirts were the latest thing. She rocked a short skirt and when she walked she looked like she was modeling in NY fashion week wearing the latest Besty Johnson jumpsuit.

But…..there’s always a BUT isn’t there? She had been having an affair….actually two affairs. One affair was with a guy in our office.  He was originally from Chicago. He was an average looking guy but had a quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor. She was actually married at the time when she started the affair with “Chicago” and her husband was out of town a lot.  “Chicago” would come over and take excellent care of her if you know what I mean. Then there was the southern gentleman from North Carolina that was a salesman from another branch that would pop in from time to time and bring flowers, take her to dinner and would tell her he even loved her. She didn’t want to commit to either of them. Besides, how much committing can you do with married guys right? Soon, her husband at the time caught on to her and filed for divorce.

She acted devastated at the time and cried for days. I kept saying “Rhiannon, why are you so upset? You were having two affairs and you weren’t happy at all. He ignored you and you were miserable.” Her answer to me was “I’m losing everything….my house, my pool, my dogs, everything.” I kept my thoughts to myself as she was upset but I couldn’t help but think, well you should’ve thought about that before you got caught. She had asked him to go to marriage counseling but he refused and just kept ignoring her. He just wasn’t very communicative and they hadn’t had sex in over a year so I think she just finally gave into temptation.

A couple of years went by and there was a new VP of sales that was an older very distinguished kinda guy. To me, he was a nurturing, professional, but personable kind of guy. He was in his upper fifties and Rhiannon was in her early thirties. Once he laid eyes on her he wanted to get to know her better. He took her to dinner several times. He would invite me to come along and sometimes I would go if my hubby was out of town. VP was a very nice and caring man. He mentored both of us chic’s and told us about the business and how he got to where he was starting at the bottom. He was full of knowledge about the industry and didn’t mind sharing info.

He soon started e-mailing and calling Rhiannon personally after office hours and pursuing her with flowers and jewelry. She told me that she had declined the gifts and told him she wasn’t interested in him that way. But, from my end I saw her continuously flirting and having drinks after work when he was in town. She was leading him on in my eyes. One day VP pulled me to the side in a private office when he was visiting our branch and asked me if Rhiannon had mentioned anything to me about his question. “No, she hasn’t said anything, what are you talking about?” He had proposed to her and given her a ring. Sigh…..I know. I know. He was married and the VP of our company. She hadn’t told me anything about this at all. I began to ask him questions like how could this even happen with him being married and what did she tell him when he did ask her? He unleashed tears to me stating how much he adored and loved her. He was so in love with her that he was willing to leave his wife and give up anything to be with her. He didn’t care what he lost as long as he had her.

I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He then told me she told him she wanted to think about it. He said she was worried about the age difference and what her parents would think with him being so much older. Also, she felt bad about him leaving his wife and children. He told her to think about it and to take her time and to keep that ring close by so that she would think of him every time she looked at it.

Here’s the thing….I’ll sum it up for you. A big restructure was about to happen. I think Rhiannon knew about it so she kept her e-mails, poetry, love notes from the VP including the ring as well. When the CEO/President dropped the bomb at our branch that Rhiannon’s position was no longer needed as well as many other position’s she had a file on the VP and showed it to the CEO/Pres and stressed how she had been harassed for months by him and how she was going to seek legal advice.

Ahem, cough, cough, hit the brakes, what was that? Yep, she knew what the fuck she was doing. She had it all in writing and even a big fat diamond ring. She had this company and VP by the balls. Not just one set of balls but a few.

When I got news of what she did I couldn’t believe it. A lot went through my mind like….Who is she? That poor VP, he really loved her. He cried to me over his love for her. He was willing to leave his wife and everything to be with her. Why did she lead him on? Oh yeah, right, she wanted money, she wanted to blackmail him to get what she needed.

She got what she wanted. The company cut her a big fat check. They didn’t even go to court. She left the company and was paid a substantial amount of money. She was single and able to buy a small place and put some of it in savings. She found another lucrative career. Nope, not in the same business but a totally different industry.

But….yep, there’s always that BUT like I said earlier right? Guess what? She’s never married again, never had any children, is now living in a low income housing area, nothing to show for that substantial amount of money and has been with her “deadbeat redneck idiot boyfriend” for ten years now. She has to loan him money all the time and she’s put on about sixty pounds and is struggling with her career big time. She’s maxed out on all of her credit cards and can barely afford to do anything at all.

That VP got fired too because of her. I stayed on with the company a couple of years and then found something else. Why am I telling all of you this story?

Because Karma gets you every fucking time. It might not be the week after you do something, it could be two years, ten years, it could be a long time. Karma is patient but she’s not too kind. She will find you and serve you.

Guess who walked into my office last week? Keep in mind it’s been twenty years since all of this happened…..That VP showed up and shook my hand and introduced himself to me. He is now the CEO of a very large supplier we buy from. I didn’t have the heart to tell him who I was because I didn’t want that horrible memory to come up and to see the look on his face of heart break. Because I honestly feel like Rhiannon broke that mans heart. Just goes to show you he came out just fine though. She on the other hand, not so much.

Yep, I’m still friends with her. She calls or e-mails from time to time to check in. I hate that her life has turned out the way it has. She never once had any remorse though for what she did to VP. For that, she got what she deserved in my eyes.

Several songs come to mind with this story so I’ll list them for you. Ladies and Gent’s take note to this story. Behave, keep yourselves in check and think of others.

Some great songs here. You’ll understand why I picked these ๐Ÿ™‚

It sounds like a tv movie or something! It really is good to see someone get what they truly deserve. At least I think it is. But I’m kind of mean like that.

Sad when someone is that self-centered that she’ll do anything to get her way…
